UPDATED INFORMATION 05/04/2009
The RevResponse channel codes have been enhanced. For detailed information on channel codes, how they are tracked, and how to create links with channel codes, please visit this updated blog post: http://www.revresponse.com/channel_codes.
A little over a week ago I blogged about some of our latest features. One of these features is the ability to track your promotions/ads more closely with a Report by Channel. Some of our partners have asked for a little clarity about these features; and we aim to please, so here goes.
What is a Channel Code?
A channel code is a short description that you can enter into your promotions which will allow us to track exactly where your subscriptions are coming from. By coding your promotions we’ll be able to tell you whether the majority of your subs are coming from a newsletter mention, a stand-alone offer, a blog post, a widget, etc.
How do I Use a Channel Code?
There are two ways to add a code to your promotions. The first is to add it when you create a promo in the ad wizard.
As you create you promotion and select through the drop-downs to create your offer, you’ll see a box called “Channel Code.” This is optional, but if you decide to track your offers you’ll want to create a code for your promotion. If you’re going to be placing a blue widget that is 250x250 you might name it “blue250.” Currently, the code can be up to eight characters long. In the future we may add the ability for longer codes, but eight is what you get for now!
The other way to add channel codes is to do so manually. This allows you to track the promotions you create for yourself like blog posts that you create for yourself. For this tracking, you’ll add a little bit of code into your links.
If you wanted to promote the white paper Do's and Don'ts of Search Engine Optimization, found at: http://www.tradepub.com/free/w_more01/, you’d need to add a little code.
Here’s what an offer link looks like before you add a channel code: http://www.tradepub.com/c/pubRD.mpl?sr=oc&_t=oc:&pc=w_more01
To track the offer, you’ll add a self-created code into this link after the colon and end it before the ampersand. If you named your code “zorro” this is what the tracked link would look like:
AFTER: http://www.tradepub.com/c/pubRD.mpl?sr=oc&_t=oc::zorro&pc=w_more01
Of course, you can name these codes in any way within eight characters.
**The code does include TWO colons.
If you're really curious to see how this code is created, use the Ad Wizard and mouse over widget links, you'll see how the tracking code works in other cases.**
Where do I See the Results of this Tracking?
Once you’ve named all of your promotions, you can check out the “Report by Channel” in the report list. This will show you exactly which of your modules are bringing in the most subs.
The report will look something like this:
If you have any questions about this feature, don’t hesitate to ask!
Can you provide an example
Can you provide an example of how to include the channel in a link that goes to the actual signup form for a publication?
Absolutely, and we'll do one
Absolutely, and we'll do one better and give examples of a few other coding options.
If you wanted to promote Oracle Magazine found at: http://www.tradepub.com/free/orm/, here are the codes you'd need for various landing options. For these examples we're using "zorro" as the channel code.
Before you add your channel code, the offer looks like this:
http://www.tradepub.com/c/pubRD.mpl?sr=oc&_t=oc:&pc=orm
Here’s how you would edit it to take you to the details page: http://www.tradepub.com/c/pubRD.mpl?sr=oc&_t=oc::zorro&pc=orm
And how it would look to take you to the qualification form (like you asked):
http://www.tradepub.com/c/pubRD.mpl?sr=oc&_t=oc::zorro&qf=orm
I hope this is what you're looking for.
Dean
I've just been using links from my own "store." It's simpler. Can you create channels with those kind of links?
For example, to link to Creativity magazine, I just use http://directcreative.tradepub.com/free/ctv/
Hi Dean. Linking from your
Hi Dean. Linking from your own partner page is equally effective in earning revenue from us. The channel codes are just a little extra that you can add to those codes if you want to see which link your audience is clicking.
For example, if on your site you promote Creativity Magazine in 2 or 3 different places and you're curious which of those promotions is generating the most successful conversions, you could add a channel code to each promotion. Without the channel code you will still see how successful you are you just may not be able to track where those subscriptions are coming from specifically.
You can create channel codes on those links when you place them on to your site. You can get some more insight into these types of codes by looking at the HTML used within our widgets.
Just like I explained above, here is how you'd add a code to a basic promotion link:
Before you add your channel code, the offer looks like this:
http://www.tradepub.com/c/pubRD.mpl?sr=oc&_t=oc:&pc=ctv
Here’s how you would edit the code to add your channel tracking in order to take your audience to the details page. Let's say your code is "Dean": http://www.tradepub.com/c/pubRD.mpl?sr=oc&_t=oc::dean&pc=orm
And how it would look to take you to the qualification form:
http://www.tradepub.com/c/pubRD.mpl?sr=oc&_t=oc::dean&qf=orm
Can the link be shortened?
Here is a text link I generated to all industries all content types. (Meaning the front page.)
http://volition.tradepub.com/c/pubRD.mpl/?sr=ps&_t=ps:w_text:chancode&_m...
which would take you to just:
http://volition.tradepub.com/
these parts seem extranious:
sr=ps
_t=ps
w_text
_m=01.00ev.1.0.0
ct
&flt=all
If you are creating a link on a webpage, this is not a problem, however if the link is being emailed or posted somewhere that requires the user to cut and paste it, you have an issue. Not everyone can do that.
Can these codes be shortened or removed? To like:
http://volition.tradepub.com/c/p.mpl/?cc=chancode
Yes, but with some work
Hi Dean,
The "pubRD" link (http://volition.tradepub.com/c/pubRD.mpl/?sr=ps&_t=ps:w_text:chancode&_m...) is a tracking and redirect (RD) link. It gives the user a tracking cookie and then redirects her to the destination page, e.g. http://volition.tradepub.com/
After that the user can wander through the site but when she finally subscribes, the tracking information is read from the cookie and logged in the subscription. So it serves an important function.
If you use the link on a web page, the length should not be an issue. However, if you do want the user to cut & paste, I'd suggest using a service like tinyurl (see http://tinyurl.com) to map the long link to a short one.
Hope that helps.

I guess I was not clear.
Not: Can the link be shortened by me?
But: Can the link be shortened by your programmers?
Why is this required?
_m=01.00ev.1.0.0
Why not
_m=L
Then in the code
If _m=L then _m=01.00ev.1.0.0
I just shortened the URL by 12 characters.
ciao,
Ray
We'll consider it
Thanks for the suggestion. We'll consider it for our next iteration. Meanwhile, if this is a show-stopper for you, I'd suggest using tinyurl so you're not waiting for us.
Best,
Jay
FYI
Hi Everyone,
After working with some of you regarding channel codes we've discovered that something we'd previously mentioned was incorrect.
Channel tracking only works if you direct people to the splash page or qualification form. Other multi-offer pages like the category pages overwrite the tracking cookie.
We apologize for any confusion this may have caused and encourage you to use the channel codes when tracking links to specific offers. We'll be working to offer you all a solution to track every page across you partner site but at this time that solution is not available.
