Time for my regular "golly, revresponse would be great if only it worked the way I want" message. ok. I run a customer service related site. I want to feature publications having to do with CRM. I know there are pubs available. I do a search via the pubtrade site using CRM. Nada. I try putting CRM as a key in the generated code. Nada. So, what's the deal. How do I advertise only these items easily. Next up. Sometimes your css code doesn't play well with MY existing css code. Really it's part of the thing with cascading, but users should be aware that unwanted things can happen. Love the fact the email reports are running, but I'd like it even more if I could read them. I can't since I intentionally use an impaired mail reader that doesn't understand most html, or other bells and whistles. I'm afraid I prefer the security of doing things this way to reading these emails. (a text format would really be better, folks). It's doable. Other companies do it. I've forgotten some of the quirks that have driven me nuts over the last few weeks, but I'm sure I'll encounter them again

Good morning, Work911,

Golly, we’re sorry RevResponse isn’t as perfect as you want it to be! The things that drive you crazy are the things we want to hear about and your posts keep us on our toes. We may all cringe over here when we see a new post from you, but the anxiety and sweaty palms you give us are all part of the improvement process.

In all seriousness, I absolutely welcome your rants (although a rave would be nice every now and then too). As I wait eagerly for you to remember all of the other things that drove you nuts last week, I’ll respond to the few you mention now…

Featuring CRM publications – I’m not sure where the problem is coming from here. I’ve played around with the promotion wizard and added in “CRM” as the keyword and I’m getting all CRM offers to show. Are you sure you’re adding it into the HTML correctly? All you have to do is create your widget in the size, color, etc. that you’re looking for, click “generate ad code” and then enter in your key. At the very end of the code that is generated you’ll see key=”>. You want to add CRM directly after the equal sign (=) and before the end quote (”). Make sure that you selected a module that only displays magazines or you’ll also be searching white paper content for relevant offers. Lastly, if you only want to display CRM Magazine, you’d be best off selecting a module that only visually displays one offer at a time. Below is an example module demonstrating this:

a.TPcell_w_cnd01l{font-family:verdana,arial,helvetica; text-decoration:underline; font-size: 10px; font-weight:bold; font-style:normal; color:#3D86C2; padding: 0px;}
a:hover.TPcell_w_cnd01l{font-family:verdana,arial,helvetica; text-decoration:underline; font-size: 10px; font-weight:bold; font-style:normal; color:#B1CEE6;}
.TPtable_w_cnd01l{font-family:verdana,arial,helvetica; border:1px solid; background:#FFFFFF; border-color:#3D86C2; border-collapse:collapse;width:300px;height:250px; font-size:10px;}
.TPcell_w_cnd01l{font-family:verdana,arial,helvetica; font-size: 10px; font-weight:normal; font-style:normal; color:#000000; padding:4px;}
.TPheader_w_cnd01l{font-family:verdana,arial,helvetica; padding:0px; height:40px; background-image:url('');background-repeat:no-repeat;background-position:top center; text-align:center;}
.TPfooter_w_cnd01l{padding:0px; height:25px; background-image:url('');background-repeat:no-repeat;background-position:bottom center;}
img.cover {width:45px;height:60px;}
a.TPheader_w_cnd01l{text-decoration:underline; font-size: 10px; font-weight:bold; font-style:normal; color:#3D86C2;background:0;} a:hover.TPheader_w_cnd01l{text-decoration:underline; font-size: 10px; font-weight:bold; font-style:normal; color:#B1CEE6;background:0;}

Alternatively, you can simply grab the direct path link to your CRM Magazine landing page ( That’s always an option for any of our offers. As always, you can contact us to create any offer you’re looking for that you can’t seem to generate with the wizard.

CSS code formatting issues – I’m going to have a chat with our developers on this one. We’ll see what we can do to keep unwanted things from happening.

Email reports – At the moment, you’re correct; we only have HTML reports. That said, it wouldn’t be too difficult to let all of you partners decide if this is what you want. Give us a little time and we’ll add a text email option for you.

I hope some of this helps and I’ll earnestly await your next post o’ issues.

ok. Just so we understand I'm not really complaining...

Let's start with an easy situation. My visitors are interested in CRM. I need to find out what, if any, tradepub publications are available that will appeal to those visitors, and more specifically those that have CRM in the title or the description.

Now, when I use the search function at tradepubs to identify these potential publications, I get none. If I put crm in the search box, I don't even get CRM magazine. Nothing shows up.

That's the FIRST and simplest issue - finding out what is available.

Next is getting the ads to display. If I use the widget builder, and insert the word CRM after the key portion of the code, I, in fact, may get ads that are tangentally related, but actually don't contain the term CRM anywhere in the ads that are displayed. So, the result is that casual visitors won't see them as pertaining to CRM topics.

Just to add a third thing...I signed up for email updates to be notified of new publications, and I can't recall receiving anything. Is that function working?

I have found that with some of the widgets you need to explicitly declare the css code in the head tag. That solved some of the formatting problems. However, I've found that creating my own "old-school"-type banners seems to work better than using the widgets. I place a screenshot of the cover to the left of a leaderboard followed by text copy to the right.

Likewise on the manual creation stuff, but the thing is that I have a range of sites and user interests, plus different layouts so doing manual creation for everything is simply too time consuming. That's why I'm hoping for improvements on the code generator.

What IS interesting is that if you use the generator, you can actually alter the complete look and feel by altering the css included in the code (which is great if you want to go that route). That way you still have the system choosing your items as you specify (sort of), but you can use colors, alternate logos, whatever for look and feel.

...and if you do it properly you can alter look and feel simply by changing a css style sheet. Also a bit time consuming.

Of course we know you’re not “complaining,” rather merely making suggestion to solve your irritations. Here’s my attempt to quell your qualms...

1. Where exactly are you looking to find CRM offers? When I go to and type “crm” in the search box, I get 3 items with CRM in the title (CRM Magazine and 2 whitepapers: Microsoft CRM 3.0 Upgrading Best Practices and Microsoft Dynamics™ CRM 3.0 Professional) followed by additional white papers relating to CRM. That is how you can find out what is available. Below is direct path URL to the search result page: (CRM Magazine currently is in the 2nd result position)

2. The modules are designed to relevantly display offers related to the category and/or keywords you provide and then optimize based on the best earning potential for our publishers. If you only want magazines with CRM in the title, I suggest creating a static (deep-linked) promotion on your site without using any of the Wizard tools. Just as Ion Channels suggests, if you’ve only got one or two titles you want to show, you can easily focus on those offers just by grabbing the direct URL’s from the corresponding landing page. Here is the URL you would use if you simply wanted to promote CRM Magazine to your audience. (you can do the same thing for every offer we make available)

We’d gladly provide a GIF to relate to the offer or you can pull something together on your own like has done. You can always contact your account manager to help you with these items if you don’t want to do them yourself. That’s what they are here for.

3. Email Updates – I assume you are referring to our ‘New Titles Notification’ email newsletter? It typically takes about a week or so before you start receiving your first copies. If you don’t receive anything by the end of next week, drop us a note and we’ll confirm that your opted-in correctly.

P.S. I passed along your CSS sample along to our developers to look at. I’ll be back in touch about that shortly.

Karen, you said:

"1. Where exactly are you looking to find CRM offers? VERY WEIRD. The link to the search results doesn't display any offers, and informs me of such. Tried it in both Firefox and IE. The search (using the search box on the lefthand side also gives no results. BUT when I search on performance management it works properly.

The good news is we are incredibly happy with yesterday's figures. Our reject rate overall is quite high, so we need to look at that, but it's good enough to deploy on most of our sites.

I probably do need some assistance on tweaking things, and seeing if I can get any help on the rejection rates, though.

Thanks for the help. We'll continue tweaking, and if and when we draw conclusions that might help others in the program do better, we'll post them. would really be nice to hear from others about what has worked.

I'm happy to hear your good news (see I love the raves) about your figures. Feel free to contact your account manager, Laurie Sparango, at for help with different offers and understanding reject rates.

As for the search results it is very weird. I sent the link around the office here and we're all seeing the same thing. Typing "crm" gets these results:

If you've got a screenshot of your message, send it over so we can investigate.

work911's picture

be glad to do the screenshot, but amazingly enough, I don't recall how. Any hints?

Karen's picture

Sure! You'll have to send it to me via email. Just go to the page you're seeing, hold "ctrl" and the "print screen" keys. This takes a screen shot. Then open up your email and paste it into a message to me:

I'll take a look.

Karen's picture

Work911 - I just sent you an email with our developer's suggestions about the CSS code issue. It looks like there's something in your style sheet that might be overwriting our font size. My email to you has more details. Let me know if it works out!

work911's picture

Thanks Karen, but I just wanted you and others to know about potential problems. That particular site was coded by someone who I paid (rather than us doing it internally), and he did some really strange things with css that continue to drive me nuts.

I live with it, and work around it, which is what I'll do in this case.

(I still can't convince the designer that he screwed up. Go figure.

Karen's picture

Thanks for letting me (and other partners) know about the potential css problems. That's exactly what this forum is here for and I'm sure that your comments will be useful to other partners.

While you deal with the fault-less designer, let us know what we can do to help you with some of the promotions we talked about earlier.

work911's picture

Karen, since I can't tell, when I do a search, whether the search function isn't working form me, or whether there aren't any relevant pubs, could you check to see if there are any related to e-learning?

I believe there WERE a number of them, but now when I go to get them and put up the code, nothing is turning up.

MAJOR SUGGESTION: For those of us who don't like the limitations of the somewhat limited (I hope temporarily) code generators, would it be possible to be informed of when offers are removed?

This is absolutely critical to what we do.
